Craftswomen in Kutch tie thousands of tiny thread knots by pinching fabric with their fingernails — without any tracing or stencil. A single dupatta can have over 70,000 individual knots. The tied fabric is then dipped in natural dye baths. When untied, the resist-dyed pattern is revealed.
Hand-tied plucking using fingernail method. No pattern guides — all by memory. Dipped in natural dye baths, sometimes up to 5 colours. Each knot is individually released post-dyeing.
